Description:
The phrase "everything is fine" can be interpreted
in different ways. In this case, it is meant to represent deception because
of its contents.
Say for example; you ask a friend if they've been doing okay, and they reply
"everything is fine". Meanwhile, the other person could be going through a
series of overbearing personal problems, but saying that statement to
provide comfort and relief to the person concerned about them, not wanting
others to worry.
This album represents that scenario. The title gives a reassuring tone,
while the contents within are the opposite, creating a desperate and
isolating aural story that unravels just how unfortunate the circumstances
are in life.
Insight:
During the writing and production of this album, I was sort of back in the same position I was in when I wrote "hollow being. feeling whole", in which I felt alone and isolated a lot of the time, only sticking to my closest friends for help and company. I was off school for the summer when I first started writing, and the first song I wrote that ended up on this album was "in the end.". It was initially intended to be for telemist's 2nd charity compilation, but got scrapped due to their personal issues in life.
That whole summer, I went down a dark path, even resorting to alcohol as a way to cope for a while until I got extremely shattered and had the worst hang over in hot, humid weather (this was in August 2023). The next few pieces I wrote during and after that phase were "remorse" (July), "smoke break." (July), "stillness." (August), the first half of the "the frail. / la mer." cover (August) and "longing" (August). Afterwards, I started working on the main tracks in between writing the noise mixtape (TRAUMA///DESIRE) for halloween, from September - October when my final year of school started.
I started to get busy both working on the album and keeping up with school, so I did my work at a good and steady pace, until finally declaring it finished on February 2024, "forevermore." being the final track made on the 14th.
A "director's cut" of this album exists, where tracks 1, 14 and 15 were extended, and 3 extra tracks were added. They were all sold on limited edition jewel case CDs that were split into 2 discs, mainly because the album was too long for it all to fit on a single one. There's also a hidden track that are both present in the digital (Bandcamp marked as a hidden bonus) and physical (CD on disc 2).
Inspirations:
- silent hill franchise
(story, atmosphere, visuals, personal. silent hill 2 taught me a tough
lesson about life and relationships. left me in tears afterward and had an
immense emotional impact on me.)
- burial
("taste of real life" aspect, atmosphere)
- nine inch nails
(industrial sounds, emotion, track sequencing, personal. "the fragile" is my
favourite album of all time, and i look up to trent a lot.)
- have a nice life & giles corey
(personal. "the unnatural world" by the duo and dan's self-titled "giles
corey" album helped me through some rough times, and i wholeheartedly
respect the messages they convey in that music.)
